Georgia’s capitol, in Atlanta, was the 43rd capitol I photographed. The capitol - one of only a handful with a golden dome - is on the smaller side, and located in the heart of Atlanta. It reminded me of Connecticut’s capitol in Hartford, both in its ornamental dome and the style of some of the interior spaces. Like a lot of southern capitols, it struggles somewhat with how to portray histories of slavery and Jim Crow, balancing statues of Georgia native Martin Luther King Jr. with those of the likes of Confederate VP Alexander Stephens. The interior has significant museum space with some interesting looks at Georgia’s history. The rotunda and ceiling are understated but stately. These photos were all taken in April of 2025.
