Virginia’s capitol, in Richmond, was the twentieth capitol I photographed. The capitol itself was designed in part by Thomas Jefferson, in a Greek classical style that is unique to state capitols. Like many especially in the south, it sits on top of a prominent hill in Richmond, and like many in the south it has grappled with its own historical depictions: the building served as the main capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and until quite recently displayed statues of confederate leadership inside the building, most prominently in the historic former legislative chambers, which now serve as a museum. Those statues appear in these photos as it was raining heavily on my first visit in 2012, so most of those photos were of the interior. These photos were taken in two trips, the first in August of 2013 and the second in February of 2022.
