Alaska’s capitol, in Juneau, was the 45th capitol I photographed. Unfortunately, I was only in Juneau for a single Sunday, and the building was closed, so it joins Wyoming and Oregon as the only capitols for which I have no interior photographs. That’s a shame, as the exterior is… really quite plain, beating out even North Dakota in that regard. If it didn’t say “Alaska State Capitol” above the door it would appear to be a nondescript office block. The building itself was constructed in 1931 as the territorial capitol, but has remained as the state building since statehood in 1959. There was a plan to construct a modern capitol in the 2010s, but it lacked support in the legislature, so the original building remains. These photos were all taken in July of 2025.
